Evoi Wines Chardonnay 2018

A new producer for me. A dozen wines turned up today. So far, so good. Plenty of struck match, which subsides with a little air, lime and pineapple, and a coverlet of spicy oak. It’s rich in flavour, and glossy in texture, with some yoghourt creaminess cut back firmly with grapefruit acidity. Generosity, with bite and shape, and a long tight and flinty finish with a nutty savoury aftertaste. It’s full on, yet shapely and controlled. Excellent. Rated : 94 Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2021 - 2026

Evoi Wines Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Deep, rich, spicy wine with black fruit, dark mint chocolate and cedar. Ripe and packed with dark berries, toasty oak, firm acidity and silty tannin. Finishes long, with a combination of sweet fruit and more umami flavours. Powerful. Needs a couple more years in the cellar. Rated : 95 Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2023 - 2033+

Evoi Wines The Satyr Reserve 2014 – 2016

I thought about publishing as three separate reviews, but given they were all tasted at the same time, grouping the vintages together in one go seems best. The Satyr is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Three strong vintages in Margaret River, and lovely to taste them together. Broadly speaking, I think 2014 is a ripe vintage showing dark fruit and supple power, 2015 more perfume and finesse, and 2016 as more brooding, dense and deep in tannin. Or something like that.

2014 Dark, smooth and supple, all the dark chocolate/panforte, with sage and mint, a flood of dark flavour punctuated with bay leaf and dried herb, so silky too, with ripe cocoa tannin, even acidity, and a pipe tobacco and nori-laced finish of excellent length. Lovely wine. Just moving into the zone for drinking and plush enjoyment. The smooth gravel tannin lingering is a bit of a highlight. 95 points. Drink 2021-2032

2015 Bay leaf perfume, cassis, raspberry and floral fragrance. It’s medium-bodied, acidity a little firmer and tannin too, with a chamois-like grip, plenty of energy, a pippy quality, plus a long and tight finish. I like the energy here. It’s a wine that needs a few more years to loosen and roll out. 95 points. Drink 2024-2035

2016 A powerhouse of black fruit, peppermint and floral perfume, biscuits and tobacco. Deep and rolling in gravelly ripe tannin, umami and dark chocolate flavour, balanced acidity and a long and firm finish. A lot of stuffing here. Plenty to unpack. Excellent. 96 points. Drink 2024-2036.

Evoi Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

A very good vintage for Margaret River, and as a current release with appropriate bottle age, also excellent value. Black fruit, cocoa powder, bayleaf and mint, dried flower perfume. It’s medium-bodied, fresh yet slightly dusty, lovely mouth-perfume, a coolness to it, but with ample dried berry flavour. Tannin is fine, again that slightly gravelly/dusty feel, and a long finish of finesse and easy charm. Very nice. Rated : 94 Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2021 - 2028

Evoi Wines Reserve Malbec 2018

Bottle number 358 of 650. Sexy price point. Brooding style here. Black fruit, leather, dried herb and baking spices. It’s full-bodied, packed with mulberry and blackberry, and has a sort of saline/seaweed umami character at its core, along with toasty spicy oak. Tannin is firm and grainy, and while there’s a slight warmth from alcohol, it doesn’t really detract. Finish is dry, spicy and pretty long. Full-on as at now, and I’d say it needs a few more years to settle. Rated : 93+ Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2023 - 2030

Evoi Wines Petit Verdot 2018

Petit Verdot sometimes takes a bit of doing to stand alone. Dark cherry, perfume, dark chocolate, cedar and camphor, biscuit spices. It’s dense, almost inky, packed with chocolate, red and black fruit, and black olive, has a lilting perfume in the mouth weaving through the depths, ripe chewy tannin, and a full finish of fine length. Excellent. Rated : 94 Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2021 - 2028

Evoi Wines Fumé Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2019

Light smokiness, passionfruit, blackcurrant buds and slight nettle. Smooth and gently glossy feel, fine acidity, citrus and gooseberry, well, lots of Sauvignon things anyway, subtle flintiness, and a soft finish of fair length and grapefruity flavour. Nicely done. Graceful, and easy to enjoy for its combination of complexity and drinking appeal. Rated : 93 Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2021 - 2024+

Evoi Wines Malbec 2018

As at now, I prefer this to the more expensive Reserve Malbec of the same vintage. Less oak, more charm. Mulberry, dark cherry, dried flowers with some vanilla, chocolate and spice. It’s medium to full-bodied, savoury but also supple and sweet in dark fruit, a pleasant dried herb and floral perfume. some grainy tannin and juicy acidity, and a chewy finish of solid length. Lovely wine. More to come. Rated : 93+ Points. Tasted : Jan21. Drink : 2022 - 2028
